Running out of gas....

.......I've always said I like running with other people. Listening to them banter, crack jokes, and talk about their daily lives takes my mind off of how uncomfortable I may be feeling, or how much longer I have to go.

The other day during a group run, me and a guy new to the group were feeling pretty fast so we kind of left the rest of the gang back. I don't like to talk much while running, but this guy was new and he wanted to talk so I thought I'd be a good sport. We talked about running, family stuff, jobs (he is a preacher).

Every once in a while, while we were talking, I'd hear this weird sound. Like he was passing gas. I wasn't sure until a few blocks later and he let out a real loud one. I thought about saying something (and I wasn't quite sure what I'd say). Instead, I just tried talking over his wind release, hoping he'd stop. And soon, he did.

It got me wondering: What is etiquette when you are running with others? Shouldn't you drop back from the pack (or speed up) when you have to "let one go." Should you hold it. (I don't advise that.) When you run alone, you do what you want with no fear of embarrassment. But with others, shouldn't you do something other than gas your friends?

Just asking.

It has happened to me (no, not passing gas while I run with others). I have heard that noise and wondered...maybe it only bothers me. Same as burping, I feel those bodily noises should be kept to your own privacy and not shared with anyone no matter how close we are to them. I dont want anyone to get that comfortable with me!

That's the worst-- when someone rips one off and you don't know them well enough to laugh about it. I almost choked to death from trying to stifle laughter at a yoga class where someone let one go and everyone acted like they hadn't heard it! If my brother had been there, I wouldn't have been able to control my laughter. I mean, stuff happens, and if you've ever tried to "keep it in," you'll know that the resulting muscle strain does not make for easy running. My only thing is the not commenting on it. That makes it more uncomfortable for everyone...

The whole notion of running with anyone else at this point in general freaks me out. Like, finding the breath to talk at all is astounding enough, let alone how disgusting I am when I'm running. When I push myself, I'm hacking stuff up, coughing, spitting and just generally being the type of out of shape human being that no one needs to see.

Well, here's my method... When I was in Springfield with my running partner, we were both gassy, and we both let loose when needed, but there was always an "Ooo, excuse me." We both knew it was okay, but I think we felt compelled to excuse ourselves. Thanks, Mom.

In September, when I was in America for 2 weeks and did an 8-mile run with someone I'd never met before (I found her on a Richmond-area running site), I held it as long as possible. But eventually there came a point where it just bounced out (come on, you all know what I mean!), and I apologized. I was very relieved when she said, "Hey! No problem. That's part of running." I still continued to apologize each subsequent time... Habit?

So I think it's best to at least mention it. At least then it isn't this elephant in the room.

I haven't had that happen to me except my hubby...and he'll do it whether we are running or not :-)...i am really surprised that so many people have experienced someone fart...i mean, be 'gassy', around them! Especially strangers! I guess the conservative side of me (which is ~1% of me) says "ewwww...how rude!"

In college we would try to get out of the way but at the least called out "farting" so that guys behind us could get out of the way. During a race a guy I was drafting off of started passing gas and it was NASTY!
