My nappy hair, Part III

Some of you must have thought I was crazy when I've posted about the difficulties of a black man finding a place that can cut his hair.
But read this interesting little story from the New York Times this morning about a black man trying to get a haircut in, of all places, Vermont.
Now, the black guy thought it was racism, because the white guy said he wouldn't cut the black guy's hair. But when asked for an explanation, the white guy said he didnt know how to cut black hair and he just didn't want to embarrass himself or the black guy.
At least the white guy was honest.
But the bigger issue remains. How is that you can be a barber and you dont learn how to cut black hair in barber school?

Too funny...but good point. Before I became a cheapskate (I do it myself), I would have my hair cut in a salon in the burbs vs. in the hood (tad bit safer).

I'm totally bald by choice so this is slightly over my head.

I have a similar problem; my hair is thick and curly and few really know how to cut it. The difference is that they pretend they do and the result is not always pleasant

Do barbers go to barber school though? Or do they just learn by watching another barber and going from there?
